Hello, everyone! This is Dr. Bob Salamon with Lowcountry Chiropractic. As always, I hope you’re doing well and staying healthy! In my last post, we discussed ways to care for your back and stay healthy at home. Today, we’ll be talking about some of the benefits of chiropractic care. Seeking out chiropractic care is the first step to living a healthy, happy, and pain-free life. The body has the incredible ability to heal itself, and chiropractic care can remove subluxations, or interferences, that prevent this healing process. There are a number of reasons why chiropractic care is beneficial for the body and mind. If you are interested in learning more, you’re in the right place. Let’s get started!
Data has shown that approximately 70 million adults in the United States deal with some type of chronic pain. Chronic pain is defined as persistent pain that lasts longer than 12 weeks. Additionally, approximately 16 million adults experience chronic back pain– That’s 8% of all adults. In fact, back pain is one of the top reasons that people miss work or school and are unable to participate in everyday activities. With that being said, it is no surprise that many people are interested in finding ways to manage their chronic pain. While many turn to medications, this doesn’t always do the job. The use of medication for pain puts a temporary band-aid over the problem, rather than identifying and dealing with the root cause. People who have tried medication and saw no results are often interested in finding alternative ways to manage their pain. Chiropractic care is one of those alternative options, especially when dealing with back or neck pain. Chiropractic is a licensed health care profession that is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders within the musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal system includes your bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and connective tissues. The main area that chiropractic care focuses on is the spine. Chiropractors are trained to make sure that your body is functioning at its optimal best, and this is done using spinal adjustments to remove subluxations. Subluxations are partial dislocations or slight misalignments of the vertebrae that block signals from your brain to your body. By correcting a subluxation, your body can restore itself to better health. (If you want to learn more about subluxations, check out one of my previous blogs!) Spinal adjustments can realign the joints and lead to pain relief, including pain from conditions affecting any part of the musculoskeletal system. While the overarching benefit of chiropractic care is that you can live a healthier, pain-free life, there are plenty of other benefits. Let’s break some of them down. Improved Immune System Function Did you know that chiropractic care can improve your immune system? Your immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues, organs, and substances that helps the body fight infections and other diseases. While the body has the natural ability to heal itself, there can be an interference with this process if the immune system is not functioning properly. Interferences can include autoimmune disorders and subluxations. The immune system and the nervous system are in constant communication. The nervous system is essentially your body’s command center– not only does it control your movements, but it also controls other body systems and processes, including digestion, healing, aging, and more. The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system, where your brain uses nerves to send signals or messages to the rest of the body. But what happens if one of these nerves is blocked, or a vertebra is misaligned, putting pressure on the nerves? This type of interference, or subluxation, can interrupt your nervous system and immune system, thus interfering with the body’s natural processes. By removing subluxations and realigning joints, function can be restored to the nerves and allow your cells to function the way they are supposed to. Improved Posture Posture is defined as the way you hold your body. There are two types of posture: Dynamic and static posture. Dynamic posture refers to how you hold yourself while you are moving, such as walking or running. Static posture refers to how you hold yourself when you are not moving, such as sitting or standing. Good posture is an important part of your long-term health, and the key to good posture is the position of your spine. Your spine has three natural curves: At your neck, mid back, and lower back. Correct posture should maintain these curves. Poor posture, such as slumping, can misalign your musculoskeletal system, cause neck and back pain, wear away at your spine, decrease your flexibility, and more. Ideally, your head should be aligned over your shoulders and your shoulders should be back, with your stomach pulled in. While practicing can help improve your posture over time, chiropractic care can also help correct poor posture. Slouching forward can stress the spine, resulting in pain. By realigning the spine and vertebrae, pain can be relieved. Additionally, a chiropractor can make adjustments and slow joint movements that help increase movement within the joint. This will ease you into good posture without any pain. Headache Relief There are approximately 45 million Americans complaining of headaches each year. It is the most common form of pain and can range from sharp to dull pain. Sometimes, headaches are accompanied by other symptoms like nausea or dizziness. There are over 150 different types of headaches, with the most common types of headaches being tension, migraine, and cluster headaches. Many people turn to over-the-counter medication, like Tylenol, to relieve pain from headaches, but this does not address the cause of the headache itself. Headaches can be caused by many things, but some of the most prominent causes are stress and back or neck strain. Chiropractic care is an effective treatment option for headaches. Chiropractors can help determine the cause of your headache, and come up with a treatment plan to help relieve your headaches. A 2016 study found that 6 to 8 sessions of cervical and upper thoracic spinal adjustments were more effective than exercise for relieving pain. Chiropractic care can improve both acute and chronic neck pain, which, in turn, can reduce the number of headaches you experience. A chiropractor can also recommend lifestyle changes that can help reduce headaches. Improved Digestion The nervous system controls the digestive system by sending signals to the brain and organs. The digestive system is made up of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, and the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. It is responsible for the breakdown of food into small pieces until they can be absorbed by the body– this process is known as digestion. As mentioned before, your brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system. This means that your digestive system has a direct link to your nervous system, and to your spine. When vertebrae become misaligned, they can put pressure on nerves or block signals being sent from the brain to the digestive system.. This can cause issues with digestion, such as bloating, discomfort, and heartburn. Chiropractic adjustments can remove these interferences and help your digestive system function properly. Additionally, chiropractic care has been shown to reduce inflammation within the body, which can promote healing and healthy digestion. Studies have also shown that chiropractic care can help reduce flare-ups from conditions such as Crohn’s disease and manage symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). These are just a few of the many benefits of chiropractic care. Seeking chiropractic care is the first step on your journey to a healthy and pain-free life. Hello, everyone! This is Dr. Bob Salamon with Lowcountry Chiropractic. As always, I hope you’re doing well and staying healthy! On my last blog, we discussed fibromyalgia, its symptoms, and potential treatments, including how chiropractic care can help. Today, we’ll be talking about how office workers can minimize back pain at work. Working at a desk for long periods of time is not uncommon these days, especially since many have made the transition to working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A recent Gallup poll found that 45% of full-time employees were working partly or fully remotely in the U.S. in 2021. This likely means that a large percentage of the population is sitting for long periods. If you sit at a desk or at a computer for most of the day, these helpful tips can help minimize pain and discomfort. Let’s get started!
It is widely known that sitting for prolonged periods of time can cause back pain, particularly in the lower back. This can be due to a few factors. First, sitting is a “static” posture: this means that it lacks in action or change. This posture places stress on the back, shoulders, arms, and legs. Consequently, this can put pressure on the back muscles and spinal discs. Additionally, after sitting in a chair for too long, most people have a tendency to slouch, which can overstretch the spinal ligaments and strain the discs and surrounding structures of the spine. Bad posture can cause lower back pain, or make existing pain worse. This pain can be felt in the lower or upper back as well as the neck, from leaning forward to look at a computer screen or other device. Pain caused by long periods of sitting or bad posture can contribute to a person’s efficiency in their working environment, which is known as ergonomics. That being said, one of the key elements to workplace ergonomics is the office chair. It is important to find a chair that is not only comfortable but promotes good posture. Office chairs should be adjustable and customizable for each individual. A chair with adjustable seat height can be altered depending on the type of work being done, and depending on the person’s proportions. Seat width and depth is also important, in order to support the user comfortably. You should be able to comfortably rest your back against the backrest of the chair and support the natural curve of the spine. This is known as lumbar support. The lumbar spine has an inward curve and lack of support for this can lead to slouching. It is also important for an office chair to swivel, or easily rotate, so that the user can reach different areas of their desk without straining. If you feel that your chair is just not doing the job, consider investing in a new one– Your spine will thank you. There are also a few important guidelines to follow to ensure the most comfortable position for your back. These include:
Even after you’ve checked all of the above guidelines off your list, there are still ways you can minimize back pain. A simple thing you can do is get up and stretch for a minute or two every half hour. If you need to, set an alarm or reminder on your phone to stretch. You can also take a short walk, perhaps across the office, or around your desk. Go to a doorway and place your hands on either side of the frame to stretch your shoulders. If your job involves talking on the phone a lot, consider using your speaker, headphones or earbuds, or getting a headset. Pinning your phone between your neck and shoulder while working can lead to stress on the back. Another simple exercise is to just breathe! Believe it or not, taking the time to breathe slowly in and out relaxes the muscles in your mid and lower back. By focusing on inhaling and exhaling, you may find that you unclench your jaw or release tension in other areas of the body. Breathing exercises also engage your core muscles. Meditation and yoga can also be helpful in relaxing the body overall, which can minimize back pain and discomfort. When you finish a long work day, the first thing you may feel like doing is sitting on the couch. However, taking a walk might be a better option– It provides your spine with a different position. Moving and stretching can keep your joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons loose, which will help keep you comfortable. It can also be helpful to exercise your core two or three times a week. Your core includes your abdominal, back, and pelvis muscles. There are plenty of core exercises to try, such as a sit-up or a plank. Find one that works best for you and try to incorporate it into your routine. Regular physical activity can make the back stronger. Another option to consider is a standing desk, which allows you to work while standing up. There are a variety of types, including “static” or “fixed” standing desks, which have a standard height, or adjustable standing desks, which allow you to adjust the height according to your needs. Standing desks have increased in popularity over the years as it was discovered that sitting for prolonged periods of time was not good for the body. The “sit-stand workstation” has also increased in popularity. This involves both sitting and standing up while working, and alternating between the two throughout the day, depending on your needs. A Stanford University study found that 78% of workers who utilize a sit-stand workstation were less likely to experience back pain. If you are experiencing back pain, you can also consider heat therapy. This can be through a heating pad, hot water bottle, or even a hot bath or shower. Most forms of lower back pain involve muscle spasms, which can be soothed with heat. Heat can increase blood flow to the muscles and improve circulation, which can relieve tightness in the back and reduce pain. Applying heat to areas such as the lower back can also help stretch the soft tissues around the spine. This, in turn, can increase range of motion as well as decrease stiffness. It is highly recommended to use cold therapy (gel bag, ice) after heat therapy to reduce the inflammation that heat therapy may cause. Massages and chiropractic care are also options for those suffering from lower back pain. Sometimes, a simple chiropractic adjustment, or spinal manipulation, can be the key to relieving back pain by removing interferences called vertebral subluxations, or pressure on the nerves. As you can see, working an office job or working from home can take a toll on your back. When sitting for prolonged periods of time, it is important to find the right office chair, as well as get adequate physical exercise. Stretching, heat therapy, cold therapy, and chiropractic care are all options to treat back pain. As always, this is Dr. Bob and I have your back covered! ![]() This is Dr. Bob Salamon! Welcome to the Lowcountry Chiropractic blog! We hope you’re doing well and staying cool! As we approach midsummer and begin preparing for fall, the imminent arrival of fall sports might be weighing on your mind, especially if your child participates in an organized sport. Along with the routine of daily practice and the thrill of Friday night games, there’s also the added worry of potential injuries. Today, we’ll discuss the importance of chiropractic care for young athletes, as well as how regular adjustments can prevent injuries and improve performance. In the United States, more than forty-five million children participate in organized sports. Seventy-five percent of families have at least one child in organized sports. And, between the ages of five and twenty-four, there are two-point-six million emergency room visits every year due to sports-related injuries. That’s a lot of ER visits! At the professional—or even collegiate—level, athletes are afforded medical expertise by some of the most renowned specialists and physical therapists available. They have free reign of top-notch facilities and expensive treatment options. When they’re injured, they’re put on a special time-bound rehabilitation routine. Most young athletes who participate in school or club sports only have access to their coaches. If they’re in an especially well-equipped program then they might have access to a sports’ medicine resident or doctor. These individuals are on hand in case of an injury, not to prevent injuries. Often, the best they’re able to offer is an ice pack and a few tablets of over-the-counter pain medication. With chiropractic care, the goal is to prevent injury, as much as possible. Our main proposition is that with regular care and proper technique, an athlete’s body should be able to manage the stress of physical activity without injury. Our secondary proposition is that with regular care and proper technique, an athlete’s body should be able to repair an injury which has occured due to strenuous activity. The Impact of Sports on the Body Young adults and children are, in more ways than one, particularly vulnerable to injury. Due to increased growth velocity and the closure of growth plates during adolescence, young athletes are susceptible to traumatic and overuse injuries. Traumatic injuries are sudden physical injuries which require immediate attention. These include blunt force trauma, bone fractures, concussions and spinal cord injuries. Overuse injuries are caused by repetitive trauma to a muscle or joint. These include conditions such as tendonitis, shin splints and stress fractures. Overuse injuries are caused by training errors—such as taking on too much physically strenuous activity at once or training without proper form. Overuse injuries are common in young adult sports because they are often unregulated in terms of practice hours, practice frequency, repetitions of exercises and rest times. As a result of adolescents’ quick expansion of both muscles and bones, tension develops across the growth plates, the apophyses (sites where tendons or ligaments attach to the bone) and the joints. This increase in tensile force makes these points vulnerable to injury. As well, during adolescence, athletes can display notable decreases in flexibility, coordination and balance. As you can imagine, these deficiencies translate into more frequent injuries. In the event of an injury, child athletes can sometimes be pushed back into competing before they’re fully healed. Children do heal faster than adults—except in regards to concussions—but coaches and guardians must take into account their immature skeletons. Premature returns to competing can result in chronic pain, lessened performance and repeat injuries. How Chiropractic Care Prevents Injury As previously stated, prevention is always preferable to treatment. Chiropractors have the knowledge and expertise to adjust joint segments to enhance mechanical motion. An increased range of motion, for anyone, will lessen the likelihood of a potential injury. This means adolescents can kick, run, jump and flip—as their coaches expect—without constantly fearing a pulled muscle or herniated disk. As well, soft tissue techniques can improve blood flow and muscle tone. Both of these combined could lead to an increased ability to perform and compete. If a young athlete is out-of-alignment, they may experience headaches, disrupted sleeping patterns, fatigue and general soreness. These uncomfortable conditions don’t have to be a side effect of organized sports. With regular adjustments, many of these secondary ailments can be reduced or alleviated entirely. How Chiropractic Care Rehabilitates In the unfortunate event an injury does occur, chiropractic care can be essential in the rehabilitation process. When an injury happens, scar tissue forms around the site, restricting motion, reducing blood supply and trapping nerves. Soft tissue techniques can bring blood flow back to the site and reduce adhesions around injuries. This, in turn, speeds up the process of recovery and allows the body to heal faster. Chiropractic care is a non-invasive form of treatment for musculoskeletal issues and its benefits are innumerable. In addition to increasing range of motion, chiropractic care can reduce pain, lessening the need for over-the-counter or prescription pain medications. Post-practice soreness might not be able to be avoided, but pain which persists for longer than three days may be the beginning of an overuse injury. A short break from training is recommended, as well as a check-up with your favorite chiropractor. While there is a risk of children being injured during practice or play, the benefits of participating in organized sports often far outweighs the negatives. Organized sports help break up the cycle of inactivity which has become more prevalent in children these days. Consistent activity has both physical and physiological benefits; improves caloric expenditure and social development. Youth participation in sports also decreases the likelihood of their participation in high-risk health-related behaviors (such as smoking, using illegal drugs). Young girls who take part in organized sports have a decreased chance of developing breast cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease and obesity. Sports also have a positive impact on their self-confidence and body image. If your child is going to participate in sports, make sure they have what they need to be successful and safe. The right chiropractor will be knowledgeable about which injuries your child might be susceptible to developing and recommend treatment based on your child’s needs. Before and after injuries, chiropractic care is the best option for an adolescent participating in organized sports. If your child is experiencing discomfort or having trouble recovering fully from an old injury, chiropractic care may be the solution. We are here to help! Reach out to set up your first appointment. We look forward to assisting in your or your child’s recovery process. We’ve got your back covered! Thanks for reading! Take care ![]() Today's blog is going to be focusing on chiropractic care for the bones in your body other than your spine! Hello, everyone! Dr. Bob Salamon here with another exciting and educational blog! I hope everyone out there is staying safe and doing well. Today we are going to be changing things up a bit! We are still going to be talking about chiropractic care, but we are going to be talking about adjusting other bones in your body besides your spinal bones. Don't forget, you have many bones throughout your body that need care too, not just your spine! I have a lot of people who come into my office who don't know that chiropractors can work on your elbows, wrists, shoulders, and other joints in your body that could be causing you pain. There are 206 bones in the human body, and they all have joints of some kind. Any movable and semi-movable joint can be adjusted. The question that is posed a lot is why would you want a chiropractor to work on a non-spinal joint? Very similar to the spine, bones throughout your body can get out of alignment and cause pain and other problems. Non- spinal joints, even though they might not have any spinal nerves coming out of them, when misaligned can create a lot of inflammation, which usually will cause pain. I'll give you an example. A patient recently came into my office who works in construction. He had fallen off a scaffold a few weeks before coming to see me, and he fell straight down and landed on his feet. However, he hit his elbow on the brick wall next to him when he was falling. When he came in to see me, he didn't have any issues with his elbow, but he was having some serious issues with his shoulder. I checked his shoulder joint, and he had very limited range of motion and when he tried to move it, it was incredibly painful. Just by looking at the mechanism of the injury, I could tell that by hitting his elbow with such force, it had pushed the humerus or upper arm bone upward into his shoulder socket. I typically don't take x-rays on joints if I don’t suspect a fracture. In this case, since I knew the mechanism of injury and did not suspect a fracture, I adjusted the shoulder without x-rays and told him to come back in a few days. Two days later, he came back in and informed me that the pain he had been experiencing had drastically decreased and his range of motion had returned to normal! I've adjusted him since then and he is basically back to optimal health. If he hadn't come to see me, his options would have been to deal with the pain, go to physical therapy, take medication or get an injection into the shoulder. I don’t believe the outcome would have been as successful as what we achieved in my office with chiropractic care. In some cases, it doesn't take a ton of work to change the alignment of a joint that is out of position, and to help ease your pain! We get a lot of patients in the office who play soccer and who injure their ankles and knees very often. In many cases, we can help them tremendously with chiropractic care. What I do normally with these joints is that I check to make sure that first of all, it's stable, which means that there isn't a tear of a ligament, tendon, or meniscus. If there is a tear of a soft tissue and the joint itself is moving as it should, that's not a situation for chiropractic . In those cases, I would refer out to an orthopedic specialist. While it might be difficult to decide who you should see first in cases of pain after an accident, or if you're just feeling out of sorts, my advice would always be to come to see me first. We may be able to help you quickly and avoid more costly or invasive treatments.
Chiropractic care can also help with improving your posture, your overall mood, and can be a huge boost to your immune system, which after this past year, we all know to be extremely important! As I mentioned above, there are 206 bones in the human body, so I'm sure you can imagine how much stress is put on all of your joints by a normal day's activity, and then imagine how much stress can be added on your body over a whole year and beyond! Chiropractic care can be an amazing solution when relieving this stress off your body and is a low-cost solution, a drug-free solution, and a non-surgical solution for your problems. We can treat everything from your jaw to your shoulder joints, to your ribs, elbows, wrist, knees, hips, and beyond. The whole point of today's blog is to let all of our readers know that if you're struggling with a joint problem, and you're not getting a lot of relief or success with the methods that you're currently using, just come and see me! Look us up! Visit our website, send us an email, or give us a call and I promise to look at what is bothering you, evaluate the joint, and if I can help you I will, and we will begin working right away! Until next time, I'm Dr. Bob and I've got your back and joints covered! ![]() Acid reflux affects more of us than you might think! This week, I'm here to talk a little bit more about acid reflux and some natural treatment options you can try! Hey everybody! It's Dr. Bob Salamon here with Lowcountry Chiropractic! I hope everyone is staying safe and doing great out there! Today on the blog we are going to be talking about acid reflux. Acid reflux is a condition that affects a lot of Americans, especially in this day and age. The medical term for acid reflux is called "GERD” or Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease. While I generally don't use this word to describe acid reflux because it’s such a mouthful to say every time, I also don't like to use it because acid reflux isn't a disease. Today, we are going to dive a little deeper into what acid reflux is, some common medical treatments, and some of the natural things you can do to get rid of acid reflux or help to manage it. Acid reflux is a condition, not a disease, and a malfunction in your body. What happens with acid reflux is that the acid that gets produced in your stomach and normally stays in your stomach refluxes up into your esophagus. This reflux creates a lot of pain and discomfort. This will usually happen after you eat a meal.Sometimes it can occur when an individual lays down to go to bed at night, and can be so bad that it will wake you up in the middle of the night! The acid in your stomach can reflux to the esophagus and then be aspirated into the lungs, which can be extremely dangerous. This danger is one of the main reasons why we need to talk about acid reflux today! Acid reflux can be painful and annoying, but it can also turn into a very dangerous condition if it gets severe. Acid reflux can cause a condition called Barrett's esophagus, and that is a precancerous condition that can lead to cancer of the esophagus. This is because the walls of the esophagus get burned by that acid that has refluxed up into it, so please remember that acid reflux is no joke and is something that needs to be taken seriously. Some very common medical treatments come in the form of medicines like Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid, and others like it. These medications lower the amount of acid that is being produced in the stomach. This might sound like a good idea because if you have less acid in your stomach, possibly less of it will reflux up into your esophagus. This medication does work, but please remember that your body doesn't do something without a reason! Acid is being produced in your stomach for a good reason, based on the amount and type of food you ingest. A certain amount of acid is needed to break down the food in your stomach so it can be properly absorbed into your bloodstream. This absorption will help you get all the nutrients out of your food that you need. My personal view on this type of medication is that by reducing the production of the acid within your body, your body will not digest food properly, and you won't be getting the nutrients and vitamins out of your food as you should be. Also, in this situation, we are just treating the symptoms of your acid reflux and not fixing the cause of the problem. This is why, in chiropractic, we like to look at what causes the symptoms and fix that cause. In a lot of cases with acid reflux, unless you have a hiatal hernia that is putting direct pressure on the stomach causing the acid to reflux up into the stomach, an important muscle in your digestive system isn't working as it should. Generally speaking, we don't see a lot of hiatal hernias causing acid reflux in the office. What happens when you eat your food is that it goes down into your esophagus and passes through the lower esophageal sphincter. This is a muscular valve inside of your esophagus and is the entrance into the stomach. Once the food goes through the sphincter and into the stomach, that sphincter is supposed to close completely. This closing allows the acid to do its thing and digest your food without getting out. The walls of your stomach are designed to be very strong to withstand this acid. Unfortunately, the walls of your esophagus are not that strong, and they cannot withstand this acid. This is why acid getting into your esophagus is a really bad situation. In a lot of cases that we see with acid reflux, the problem is that the sphincter muscle is not closing properly, or sometimes it is not closing at all when your food reaches your stomach. When this happens, the acid in your stomach is going to reflux into your esophagus. What we want to ensure is that the sphincter always closes when it is supposed to close and opens when it's supposed to open. Guess what controls the opening and closing of this very special valve? It's a nerve! These nerves happen to come out of your spine right around the middle of your back (T5, T6, T7 area). Once there is food in your stomach, your brain will send a signal down to that nerve to say, "Close that sphincter!” In most cases, this nerve will work properly. It will listen to the brain and follow these directions perfectly. However, sometimes the communication between the brain and that valve via that nerve is not working correctly. This is one of the main causes of acid reflux! The valve is not closing properly because the nerve it is connected to is not working properly! What could be causing this nerve to not work properly? If the bones of your spine are lined up properly, the spaces or foramen in between them are open and will allow the nerves to come out as they should and to act as they should with no interruption in communication between the brain and the body. The nerves in your back control every system in your body, so if one does get blocked or interfered with, you will notice a difference. When your bones get slightly out of alignment, the foramen that allows the nerve to come out closes down and that nerve gets pinched and irritated. This is called a subluxation! A subluxation is a chiropractic term, which is what all chiropractors work on. My job is to find those nasty subluxations in your spine and correct them and keep them corrected. Fixing these subluxations will allow your body to function properly. When it comes to the acid reflux cases that I have seen, I will palpate for the subluxation (usually found in the middle of the back). Sometimes there is actual pain associated with the subluxated area. This tells me that the nerve in that area is inflamed and not working properly. Once I find this, I adjust or treat that subluxated vertebrae. Low and behold, after this treatment, we get pressure off of that nerve and things start flowing again. That nerve starts to become healthy again, that sphincter starts working properly again, and almost like a miracle that acid reflux and its symptoms begin to go away. This whole process is pretty amazing, and while I've seen it successfully work many times in my office. I am still shocked by it. The body is designed to work optimally, and a subluxation of the spine is one of the things that will interfere with the body's ability to stay optimally healthy. If the cause of your acid reflux is spine and nerve-related, then chiropractic care can help with your condition. On the other hand, if it's being caused by a hiatal hernia, that is a completely different story and is more of a medical issue. If it is being caused by a chiropractic subluxation, we can help you. This holds true for all conditions in the body. Every organ and function of your body is controlled by nerves. If there is a subluxation in other parts of your spine, you could be experiencing other conditions and symptoms for which medicine will only reduce your symptoms. Chiropractic is different; we look at the cause of the problem and correct the cause and not the symptom. This way we end up fixing the problem and you won't need to take medications anymore! If you are suffering or know someone suffering from acid reflux and want to be checked out to see if a subluxation of the spine is causing the reflux, please contact us and we will be happy to do a thorough exam. We will take some x-rays and figure out if we can help your issue with chiropractic care. All of this also holds true for other issues, pain included, that you've just had enough of and want to get corrected naturally. I hope this week's blog has helped shine some light on acid reflux and puts things into perspective for you! I hope you all have a wonderful day and I will see you next time! Remember, I'm Dr. Bob and I've got your back AND your acid reflux covered! Today I will be discussing a handful of easy to do and very important stretches to help keep you limber and healthy between your chiropractic appointments!
Hey everybody! It's Dr.Bob here with Lowcountry Chiropractic with another exciting blog dedicated to your body and your lower back. I hope everyone is staying safe and well out there. Today, we are going to be talking about stretches dedicated to the lower back and the lower part of your body. A lot of patients come in with complaints about lower back pain, stiffness, tenderness, and other similar issues. I will be discussing some very simple and effective stretches today that everyone can do to help with this kind of pain, no matter if you're working at home on your computer, on a construction site, or in a traditional office setting. If you add these stretches into your life every day, they can help save you and prevent you from injury. These stretches help if you have a job that requires you to lift heavy things. One thing I will say though before we get into today's blog, these stretches are not a substitute for chiropractic care. Chiropractic care and stretches are two different things. Stretches are meant to elongate your muscles and keep them toned and loose so they don't seize up and pull the vertebrae out, irritate the nerve, and cause a subluxation. If you have a subluxation, the stretches aren't going to fix the subluxation, which is what I'm here for! I want to give you four main stretches to use every day. These are stretches that I give to my patients all the time. The first needs to be done in the morning before you get out of bed. This is especially for my readers who wake up very stiff in the morning and it takes time to straighten up and out of bed before you can get moving for the day. This stretch is wonderful, so I recommend you giving it a chance and see how your body improves over time when adding it into your schedule!
This second stretch is for people who sit a lot. There are a lot of people out there who sit for hours during the workday, which can be particularly hard on the body. You should be doing this particular stretch every half hour or so, maybe even more. Don't just sit in the same position all day hunched over your desk and your computer. When you sit there for hours, everything begins to tighten up. Gravity settles down into your discs and it's not a healthy situation. So, what can you do? Very simple! Stretch!
This third stretch is my favorite! I do it before and after I go to the gym, before and after I run, and I do it before and after I need to lift something heavy. This is a perfect stretch for anyone out there in the construction field who is lifting anything heavy. Please make sure to do this stretch along with all the stretches we've talked about today. If you add all of the stretches we will be talking about today into your routine, you're going to prevent a lot of bad injuries. If your muscles are looser and then you put weight on them, they're going to handle it a lot better compared to if they were wound up and tight. You can do this next stretch multiple ways, either by leaning onto a desk or chair or carefully balancing without one.
Stretch number four is a stretch called a child's pose. The child's pose is a yoga stretch. Some of you may be familiar with this, and if you are, you know what a wonderful stretch this is!
These four stretches are amazing for your lower back. While we are talking stretches today, I want to give you a few more simple stretches to add to your everyday life to help stretch out your piriformis muscles. The sciatic nerve goes through the piriformis muscles, so sometimes it is easy to blame sciatic pain on your lower back when it is coming from the piriformis muscles. When this happens, your piriformis muscle has tightened up and is squeezing that sciatic nerve, and that is not good! These next two stretches are to help you work on your piriformis and your psoas muscles, which are your hip flexors. The hip flexors are attached to the front of your hips and back in your lumbar spine. Sometimes you can get lower back pain and it's actually related to your psoas being tight. To stretch your piriformis muscles:
You can stretch your psoas muscles in many different ways, but today I am just going to give you a few options on how to stretch them.
All of these stretches are good basic. every day, effective stretches. They are effective if you keep up with them and make time for them in your busy schedule. if you don't do them every day, they won't help you as much as they could. Now that you have this blog as a reference point, there aren't any excuses not to do them. However, let me reiterate, these are stretches. This is not self-prescribed chiropractic care. These stretches will help you, but if you have a subluxation in your spine, you won't be able to stretch it out. When you have a subluxation, that is when you need to call me! If you're suffering out there and you need relief from the pain in your lower back, are experiencing sciatic pain or other pain, make sure to look us up, come find us, and we will be happy to help you in every way we can! I'm Dr. Bob, and remember, I've got your back covered! Until next time, take care! ![]() Curious about what goes into the process of taking your x-rays when you come to visit me? Today, we'll be talking about the whole process and how I use x-rays to analyze your spine. Let's take a look at an x-ray together and discuss some helpful information from your favorite Spanish-speaking chiropractor! Hey, everybody! It's Dr. Bob Salamon here with Lowcountry Chiropractic. I hope you're all doing well and staying safe out there! Today, we are going to be doing something a little different with the blog! We will be discussing a set of x-rays that I recently took of a new patient - with picture examples! I want to use this blog and each image to talk about how I analyze the x-rays that I take when you visit my office and how we will begin working together on your wellness journey after I do so. These x-rays are imperative! They help me to help my patients. I feel like x-rays are extremely important in helping me find the spinal issues that need to be corrected. ![]() The patient I will be talking about today is a painter from Honduras. Before she came and saw me a few weeks ago seeking help, she was carrying a very heavy bucket of paint and hurt her back. The symptoms she was experiencing after she hurt her back were right lower back pain, sciatica (meaning she had pain down the back of her right leg) and numbness and tingling in her toes. What I do normally, with any new patient such as this young woman, is take a detailed health history and do a chiropractic exam first, and follow these two steps by taking a set of x-rays. What's unique in our office is that we take full spine x-rays. They're 14X36 inches in size and they show the whole spine in two different views. These x-rays are very helpful for me, but very importantly they also help every patient see what's going on with the spine. I can walk them through what is causing their pain and how I am going to work on trying to alleviate these issues by pointing out exactly what's happening on their x-rays. What I am always looking for on these x-rays and what I am aiming to correct are subluxations. Subluxations are vertebrae that have misaligned and are irritating nerves and causing pain. Today, this blog is going to be a behind-the-scenes look at what I do when analyzing my patient's x-rays and how they help me! Take a moment by examining the first picture below which shows the two 14X36 x-rays that I take of my patients, and the specific one I will be discussing today! ![]() The first x-ray that I look at is a side view of my patient, called the lateral. This x-ray helps me look at and see the curves of the body and the whole spine, and I look at the disc space between every vertebrae to see if there is any arthritis in the spine. Arthritis shows up as little spurs or hooks on the bones. As you can see, she does not have any arthritis and the disc spaces between the vertebrae look good! Look closely at this picture. I would personally like to see a little more of a curve in her lower back so it looks a little more like a C. Her back is pretty straight, as is her neck. I would also like to see more of a curve at the top of her neck, too. Even with these wants, her back looks pretty good overall! ![]() Now, let's talk about the second x-ray called the A to P, which is the front-to-back x-ray. When I take this picture the patient is looking away from me, meaning the x-ray is looking at their back straight on. I do this because when I adjust my patients they are lying face down, and I want to mirror what I am going to see on my table when I adjust them. As you can see from the third picture here, there is a scoliosis or a curvature in the middle of her back, which is not normal. The bones in the middle of her back should be straight and lined up perfectly with the rest of the spine. When you look closer at the 4th picture, you can see that her pelvis on the left side is much higher than the right side! From the A to P view, I see that one of the main problems is that the curvature in her spine is a compensation for what's going on in her lumbo-pelvic area. Also, in addition to the scoliosis in the middle of her back, her vertebrae are rotated to the left. Why has this happened? It's being caused by a problem in the sacrum, which has rotated to the right and is causing the vertebrae to rotate to the left. The scoliosis in her back is irritating the nerves that are coming out between the vertebrae. Finally, please look at picture number 5. You will see the ilium (the largest part of the pelvis) is 205 mm in length on the left-hand side and only 200 mm on the right side. This means the right ilium has rotated forward and the left has rotated backward!
Once I had taken these x-rays and analyzed them, the trouble areas are where I started with my patient's treatment, which I corrected with what I was feeling in her spine as I adjusted her. Low and behold, after this specific treatment based on my findings, she is doing so much better! After about three treatments she came in and shared with me that she is feeling great, her pain is gone, and she is back to working normally! I might not have straightened out her back and her scoliosis but I removed enough pressure on her nerves to make a difference. Now that she has come in to see me to correct her issues, her new goal needs to be maintaining her adjustment. The best way to do this is to continue coming back to me for consistent maintenance and wellness care. If she doesn't, there is a potential that the problem she experienced could come back. Think about it this way; it only takes the weight of a dime on your nerves to affect them. You, or in this case my new patient, don't need to be perfectly straightened out to get the excellent results you need and deserve! I hope today's blog has helped and has been informative! I hope you enjoyed an inside look at how I, as a chiropractor, use x-rays to help me treat my patients. X-rays are just another tool in a chiropractor's toolbox along with understanding their patient's health history and performing a consultation and exam to understand what our patients are going through. For me, it is imperative that I get a good set of x-rays so that I can give the best care to my patients. If your spine looks like the one we've been discussing today, or if you want to know what your spine looks like, please look us up! Send us an email or give us a call, and we'll get you in here and get started on your wellness journey! Until next time, I'm Dr. Bob Salamon and I've got your back covered! Take care! ![]() Curious about how chiropractic care can benefit you or anyone you know that might be expecting? Dr. Bob is here in this week's blog to talk about how chiropractic care can safely help bring ease and relief to pregnancy! Hey everybody! Dr. Bob Salamon here with Lowcountry Chiropractic and another exciting and informative blog! I hope you're doing great out there! Today, we are going to be talking about pregnancy and why it's a good idea for pregnant women to be under chiropractic care. Let's jump in and get started. In case you have any questions or hesitations, I am personally trained to work with women who are pregnant, and I do have extensive experience. Why is it so important to receive chiropractic care during pregnancy? As the baby grows, we see that this brings on a lot of physical, chemical, and hormonal changes in the mother's body. Let's talk about those physical changes! As the baby continues to grow bigger, this can cause your hips to become displaced, your pelvis can tighten up, and it can cause you to walk with a different posture than you normally do. All of these changes can put a lot of stress on the joints in your body. The baby can also sit on a plexus of nerves that are in the sacrum or lumbar area of the body. In this case, it is very common for a woman to experience low back pain. My job is to help prevent or alleviate any of these issues to help you feel better and to help the baby remain healthy and safe throughout your pregnancy. There are three main reasons why women seek me out during their pregnancy:
The space between the pelvic and the lumbar section is where mom’s belly fits, and the table can be adjusted to accommodate the height of the mother and the size of their baby. This allows plenty of room for mom and baby to be comfortable. Thanks to the type of table that I have in my office, I can give relief to my pregnant patients. If it weren't for this specific table, I wouldn't be able to adjust someone who is far along in their pregnancy face down. Being face down to receive your chiropractic care is one of my preferred ways to adjust my patents! Please don't hesitate to come in and get adjusted. You and your baby will be safe and comfortable throughout the entire process. If you have any questions, or if you're pregnant and you would like to chat and ask me some questions about what you should be doing during your pregnancy, please feel free to get in touch with us. As always, we would be very happy to help anyone in any way we can! I hope this blog has been helpful and informative, and for any of my readers who are pregnant, I hope everything is going well for you and that you come to see me soon! I promise that we will take good care of you! Until next time, remember that I am Dr. Bob and I have your back covered! ![]() Do you struggle with headaches regularly? Chiropractic care is highly recommended to help with your headaches! You don't have to suffer anymore, let chiropractic care help you! Hey everybody! It's Dr. Bob Salamon here with Lowcountry Chiropractic and another exciting blog! I hope you are staying safe and well out there! Today, we are going to be talking about something that affects many people worldwide daily, and that is headaches! Hopefully, through this blog and what we are going to be talking about today, I can help give you some information on how to combat your headaches naturally! There are many different types of headaches out there; classic migraines, common migraines, cluster headaches, tension headaches, and many more. Each of these different types of headaches is caused by different things. Migraine headaches will have onset symptoms that appear before getting the actual pain in the head like sensitivity to light, floaters in your eyes, and auras. Each of these early-onset symptoms acts as a warning to an individual that a massive headache is on its way. Migraine headaches are a little more complex in general because they're usually related to some hormonal or chemical imbalance in the brain. Today, we are going to put migraines to the side and talk about tension headaches. Generally speaking, tension headaches are headaches that will progress as the day goes on. You may wake up feeling great, but as the morning wears on into the afternoon, you start to get a headache. You might feel the pain in your temples, behind the eyes, or maybe even in the back of your head. These headaches may or may not require you to take some medications to help you get through the rest of your day. Let's talk about tension headaches and their causes. Primarily tension headaches are vascular, meaning they are caused by the changes in your blood vessels or capillaries in your brain. Your capillaries carry blood to and from your brain, and the pressure on the walls of those tiny capillaries is really important. If you have too much pressure on the walls of your capillaries, it can cause inflammation. That inflammation, as we all know, can cause some serious pain. Tension headaches can also be caused if the capillaries in your brain expand, causing your blood vessels in your brain to make up more space, resulting in serious pain as well. Do you know the "normal" amount of headaches that your body can suffer every week? Zero! No headache is normal, and there is no such thing as a "normal" headache or a "normal" amount of headaches to have every week. I have so many patients that tell me that they get "normal headaches" about 2-3 times a week. This isn't a normal thing to experience, we are shooting for zero headaches every week! If you're getting more than zero headaches every week, it might be time to find a new way of dealing with them and preventing them! Back to blood vessels! What controls the sizes of these blood vessels in your brain is the nerve supply. Remember that every organ, blood vessel, tissue, gland, skin cell, and everything in your body has a nerve supply that comes out of the spine and spinal cord. If that nerve is somehow inhibited, meaning there is pressure on that nerve or it's pinched in some way, the signal from the brain is not getting through to that nerve as it should. In these situations, isn't it conceivable that maybe that blood vessel could dilate because it's not getting the right supply? Or, conversely, could that blood vessel constrict for the same reason? The answer is yes to both of these questions because interference with nerves can either speed things up, slow things down, enlarge things, shrink things, and stop things from happening as they normally should. To ensure that these blood vessels are the proper size and you have the proper amount of blood flow going through those vessels in the brain, one of the things that helps with tension headaches is chiropractic care! How does it help? What chiropractors are trained to do is to take the pressure off the nerves that may be pinched because a vertebra or a bone in your back is out of place. My job is to analyze where in your spine the bones are out of place, called a subluxation, putting pressure on nerves and affecting a lot of things in your body. Subluxations can get in the way of every system in your body, along with creating the tension headaches we are talking about today. My job is to correct those subluxations with my hands so that those nerves are freed up and they start working properly. This allows the blood vessels to go back to their normal size and help the headaches go away! The other alternative to help with your tension headaches is to take medication. The medication that is out there can solve the problem short-term by removing some of that inflammation off the blood vessel. Just like any medication though, it doesn't correct the cause of the problem. If the cause of the problem is a subluxation of your spin and irritated nerves, the medication can't fix that problem. Chiropractic aims at fixing the problem that's causing these symptoms. Also, every medication has side effects. Looking at the list of medications that are out there for headaches, one of the side effects of long-term use of anti-inflammatories is that they can lead to liver damage! This liver damage is just one of many side effects connected to this medicine! If you are using medication regularly to help with your tension headaches, you might want to consider chiropractic care because the results are incredible and you can avoid those side effects. If you come into our office to help your headaches, we will do a complete exam, go through your medical history, give you a full consultation, and we will take some X-rays to see where those subluxations are. If I can feel where those subluxations are or what is causing your headaches, we will get to work right away working to fix these issues causing you pain. Chiropractic care is an all-natural treatment for headaches and there are no medications involved. If you're struggling with headaches and you want a new approach from the one you're already using, look us up! We would love to help you. I hope all of this information helps! Don't forget, I'm Dr. Bob and I've got your back covered! Have a great day, and we'll see you soon! ![]() Chiropractic care is an excellent form of care for everyone at every age! Today we're going to be talking about chiropractic care for children! Welcome back to the blog, readers! I'm Dr. Bob Salamon with Lowcountry Chiropractic! I hope you are all doing well out there, and that you're staying healthy and safe! Today we are going to be expanding on the idea that chiropractic care is beneficial for everyone at every stage in their lives. We've recently talked about the many benefits that chiropractic care offers to the elderly, and today we are going to turn the tables and talk about the benefits of chiropractic care for our children and younger generations. While their bodies are growing and developing, who better to have their brain function and their immune systems strengthened with chiropractic care than our children? When it comes to the goal of any chiropractor, it comes down to going beyond fixing the many ailments that can be connected to poor alignment and a subluxation. We care for your back, which is connected to the nervous system and your brain. The brain controls every operation in our bodies. While we are thrilled that chiropractic care can help so many different things, our goal is to ensure that the body's nervous system has every chance to work as efficiently and effectively as it can! CHILDREN AND CHIROPRACTIC CARE Many might think children don't need chiropractic care. Their bodies are brand new, healthy, and they haven't had to carry the weight and stress that adulthood and time can bring. While this is true, even before they're born, children can experience stress on their nervous system. These nerve irritations or subluxations are a part of everyday life. You've watched a child learning how to roll themselves over, hold up their heads for the first time, learn how to walk, and take their first stumbles and falls. Imagine the stress that puts on their developing nervous system. Subluxations can occur from bad posture, sleeping on their tummies, remaining in one position for a prolonged period, knocks and falls, and much more. Stress can be put on the nervous system before a child is even born. This can happen due to being in an award position in the uterus, restriction of movement, or birth complications like fast or very slow labor or cesarean delivery. We all know the importance of a healthy back and nervous system that chiropractic care can deliver, and we know that children deserve this care just as much as adults! Introducing chiropractic care to children at a young age can put them on a course of having a very healthy lifestyle. While many still might believe that chiropractic care is only for adults, it can be even more important for a chiropractor to care for and check on your children due to spurts of rapid growth, changes in their bodies, and development. Also know that chiropractic care for children, while it might be a new idea for some parents, it is not a new idea overall and has been around for some time. According to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), many parents have feared how their children would respond to treatments and if they were safe. Over the years, many health professionals have sided with these parents. At the same time, doctors of chiropractic have been spending years trying to teach and assure parents that treatments are safe. Any injury or pain resulting from a chiropractic treatment was connected to underlying pathologies. Thanks to these studies and years of hard work, more parents and health professionals have gotten on board with chiropractic care. It is recommended that chiropractors do a very thorough examination and speak with parents about their medical history and their child's before treatment begins. Also, just like I mentioned in my previous blog about elderly chiropractic care, an infant would never receive the same kind of care that an adult would. Their treatment would be adjusted to their needs and age to promote the utmost safety and care! Also, don't forget that chiropractic care is non-invasive and its foundations are based on effective and gentle adjustment techniques that are safe and have been well tested. Remember my blog late last year where I discussed the many myths chiropractors have to constantly disprove? The biggest one is that chiropractors are not real doctors. We busted that myth! Your child's care and health are very important and will be in very confident hands any time they are in a chiropractor's office. THE BASICS What do you remember about your childhood? Before every smart device took over, we were outside running, jumping, climbing, swinging, and playing every game and sport we could think of. This also meant a lot of stumbles, falls, and accidents. They're still learning, still understanding their balance and coordination, and they haven't fallen enough yet to understand the full consequences of their actions. Their bodies respond to these incidents and can carry and hold tension and subluxations just like an adult's body. Chiropractic care can help realign their spine and joints, which is incredibly important as a child grows. These subluxations, remember, can get in the way of the brain functioning and communicating to the body as it should. In a body that is growing and changing every day, they need these connections and communications to make sure the best decisions are made for their health and development. Also, remember that chiropractic care is an excellent way to avoid the use of over-the-counter or prescription medications. According to the ACA, one of the most common reasons why parents take their children to a chiropractor is to help with the care and management of chronic ear infections, instead of them taking a plethora of antibiotics. GROWING BODIES Children and adults have the same joints, but they aren't fully formed in a child's body right away. Due to this, as I mentioned above, treatment will be specifically tailored to their little bodies. The adjustments will be done faster and with much less force, due to their increased flexibility in the developing joints and that they are much smaller. Instead of manipulating joints as chiropractic care can do for adult bodies, chiropractic care helps mobilize the joints in a child's body. When it comes to infants and in utero, it's even more tailored. For babies, many common issues include sleep problems, issues with nursing, colic, torticollis, and plagiocephaly. Chiropractic care has shown drastic improvement with each of these issues, along with helping or preventing any long-term effects. In utero, treatments can help prevent any sort of constraint. If the baby moves in a certain way, they can remain in that one position for several months. Wouldn't that be uncomfortable for you too? According to the ACA, "the goal of treatments is to restore motion to the joints and balance the tissues to keep everything as biomechanically even as possible. Taking the tension off from day one can help allow for optimal growth and development." TOP REASONS AND BENEFITS OF TAKING YOUR CHILD TO A CHIROPRACTOR
