A brand new year is here! I want to share some of the best tips you can do for your body to keep healthy and happy in 2021!

Hello everyone! It's Dr. Bob Salamon with Lowcountry Chiropractic. Welcome back to the blog and a very Happy New Year to you! I hope you're staying safe and well out there, and I hope you're taking care of yourselves! Welcome to 2021! I think we are all very happy to see it here, and we are all happy to get out of last year and all of its craziness. With a new year comes resolutions to work out, eat better, and be healthier overall, right? Sadly, these resolutions usually only last for a short time. In honor of that and in honor of 2021, I want to help you achieve your goals. So, I wanted to share a list of things with you that you'll be able to stick with and make part of your everyday life, to make sure this year and beyond are the healthiest they can be. If you do everything on this list that you're about to read, you will get healthier without question. It's a simple list, but I won't lie to you; it won't be easy. Each of the listed items takes effort on your part to incorporate them into your lifestyle. I personally have nothing to do with this list, outside of providing it for you, except for the last point we will talk about today. Let's kick off this new year and jump into this list to start on a healthier and happier you!

#1 Go Green!
I'm not talking about saving the earth, I'm not talking about saving trees from getting cut down, and I'm not talking about global warming. I am talking about eating healthy and eating green things. Some of the best ways to eat green are by eating things like salads, fruits, and vegetables. It's not only about eating green things but also about eating multicolored things. They call this kind of diet "eating the rainbow" because those are the things that have a lot of phytonutrients and antioxidants in them like berries, nuts, peppers, romaine lettuce, and much more. I eat a lot of my green food raw. I eat salads a lot, but at night I'll have a piece of fish with green beans and the green beans will be raw, because when you cook food it tends to remove the nutrients from it. When I say "go green" I really mean that you need to get away from eating food that's white or brown, and you need to eat colorful things that come out of the ground or grow on trees. Eating this way will help you become much healthier! Another reason to eat green is that they are alkaline in nature and not acidic. You'll find acidic elements in starches, bread, pasta, candy, and sweets. Fruits and veggies will make your body more alkaline. This is so important because diseases like cancer thrive in an acidic environment, and you don't want that!

#2 Refine Your Life!
What do I mean by this? I'm talking about refined sugars. You want to try to eliminate eating foods that have unnaturally occurring sugars in them and replace them with foods that only have natural sugars. Unfortunately, almost all the products you see on the shelves of a grocery store have a ton of refined sugars in them. Why do we want to avoid refined sugars? There are a lot of reasons, but the two most important are as follows:
  • When sugar is not metabolized by your body, it gets stored as fat in your tissues and organs.  This is obviously not a good thing.  Eating refined sugars at night is worse since your body does not have time to metabolize them.
  • Most importantly, sugar creates inflammation in your body. Inflammation can lead to a lot of problems with your organs, glands, blood vessels and joints. Inflammation in your joints can lead to arthritis and pain.

#3 Get a Supplemental Plan!
I'm not talking about a medicare supplement for insurance.  I'm talking about health supplements to the foods that you eat. We are not going to get 100% of everything we need from the food that we eat every day. To help with this, you want to try and supplement your intake with various items. I take Juice Plus+, which is whole foods in capsules. If I'm not getting 100% of all my fruits, vegetables, and berries every day this supplement helps to bridge the gap between what I am eating and what I should be eating for a healthy body. In terms of supplementation, I take fish oil and coconut oil which are huge anti-inflammatories. You might want to consider adding one or more into your diet. Another supplement you should look into adding that I always talk about is vitamin D3. It is an extremely great and inexpensive supplement to boost your immune system. Boosting your immune system is so important when we are already dealing with COVID, the flu season, and more. You want your immune system to be working at 100% so it can defend itself against some of these dangerous things that are out there. I recommend most people take between 3000 to 5000 IUs of D3. I'm taking 10,000 right now during the pandemic. I will say that I haven't felt anything in terms of a sniffle or a sore throat since this pandemic has started, so I know it's doing something good for me!

#4 Don't Be a Couch Potato!
We've had a lot of couch potatoes in 2020 and so far into 2021 because a lot more people are working from home and they're not as active as they should be! You need to incorporate exercise into your routine. You need to add not only cardiovascular exercises like running, walking, swimming, or biking, but you also need to add in cross-training with weights, high-intensity interval training, and more to trick your body (in a good way!) to keep improving. If you do the same workout every time, your body gets lazy. You have to mix it up, which is why I do Crossfit.  Every class is different, incorporating different body parts every session. Don't be a couch potato!  You have to get up and start a habit. It takes three weeks to make or break a habit, so let's do this!

#5 Rest and Relax!
This means getting enough sleep every night, and that means at least 7-8 hours, which is recommended by the experts. The primary reason to get enough sleep is that during your REM stage of sleeping, your body is taking the time to repair itself from all the work you've done throughout the day. The neurons, synapses, the coverings and linings of your organs, your blood vessels, and your whole body heals and repairs itself when you're sleeping.

#6 Don't Worry - Be Happy!
What does this mean? Experts say about 95% of what we worry about is either really not important or is never going to happen, so we really shouldn't be worrying about them. We spend too much time worrying about things that aren't going to occur or even impact us. What I would challenge you to do this year is to take a more positive approach to life if you're not already. Try to look at the glass as being half full instead of half empty, and look at the blessings you have in your life instead of the negative things. Put a list together if you have to, but we all have many things we can be grateful for in life. This can give you a little joy and optimism as you go through this year.

#7 Get Connected
This is the one thing on the list that you need me for! I'm not talking about getting connected on social media (shoutout to Creative Consulting for doing an amazing job!). No, this is getting your brain and body to talk to one another. This is the only way your body is going to stay optimally healthy. There is a little thing called the spinal cord that connects the brain to all of your body parts, along with the nerves that go out from your spinal cord. If you don't take care of your spinal cord and the spinal nerves, your brain (which makes all of your body's decisions and sends out all the messages out to your body) will be sending those messages out, but they will reach their destinations improperly. So, the body is not going to be effectively doing the work that the brain wants it to. Also, if those nerves aren't working properly, the body can't communicate back to the brain. The brain will then not know what decisions it should really be making.

How do you keep this connection working properly between your brain and your body? Go to a chiropractor! I am trained to remove subluxations of the spine, which are conditions where the vertebrae are irritating a spinal nerve and interfering up the conduction of mental, electrical and chemical impulses from the brain to the body. I and my fellow chiropractors are trained to remove those subluxations from your body and allow your brain and body to communicate as they should! It's amazing what benefits you'll see when your body is free from subluxations. By removing subluxations, your body can experience:
  • Pain reduction/elimination including headache resolution
  • Resolution of acid reflux
  • Reduction of sinus issues
  • Strengthening of your immune system
  • Sleeping better
  • Having better respiratory healthy
  • Having better digestive health
  • Eliminating or controlling diabetes and high blood pressure without lots of medication
  • Restoring energy levels
  • Reduction of insomnia
  • And much more!
Remember these issues can be helped without the use of dangerous medications that alway have side effects. There is so much that goes hand in hand with chiropractic care because the nerves that come out of your spine do everything and control every function of your body. This is how you get connected! If you need to get connected, you know who to call or email - it's me! Dr. Bob Salamon!

I don't want you to stress out and think that you have to do this list perfectly. You just need to follow it fairly well, because if you're not doing any of them and you implement even some of  them into your life, you'll see a huge improvement in your health this year. You'll lose the weight that you want to lose, you'll build muscle mass, you'll sleep better, you'll have more energy, you'll have better focus, and you won't get sick as often. The real important thing on this list, outside of the essential chiropractic care, is nutrition. Nutrition is the most important thing you can do for yourself in 2021, but of course, I want you to do this whole list!

I hope this helps and gives you a little encouragement for the new year. This is going to be a better year for you but you have to want to make it better! ! If you need any help with the items on this list, we do offer consultation on each of these topics. Come see me, call me, or email me to get started. Remember, I am Dr. Bob and I've got your back covered. See you next time, readers. Stay safe out there and Happy New Year!

The Battle Against Headaches

Headaches are an incredibly common ailment for millions of Americans every year. Did you know that proper chiropractic care can help get rid of them for good?

Hey everybody! It's Dr. Bob Salamon here with Lowcountry Chiropractic. I hope everyone is well and safe. Today we are going to be discussing a condition that millions of Americans suffer from weekly, and that is headaches! There are many different types of headaches: classic migraines, common migraines, cluster headaches, sinus headaches, headaches that could be caused by brain tumors, brain bleeds, and many others. The one type of headache that is the most common and one that most people suffer from is something called a tension headache.

The reason why I want to talk about headaches is that they can be very debilitating; they can affect your quality of life, they've been known to keep people out of work, they can affect productivity, they can make you very tired and irritable, and they can affect your relationships with your loved ones. It is a very important topic that needs to be addressed! So we are going to be talking about tension headaches and discuss some of the natural treatments and medical treatments that are available out there to treat headaches.

Most tension headaches are vascular in nature. This means that they have to do with the size of the blood vessels in your brain or in your head. How does this work? In your head, you've got many arterioles and capillaries that are supplying blood to the brain.  If these vessels get too big or too small, this can cause headaches. We've talked about how blood needs to flow through a vessel of a certain size to properly do its job. Say that the blood vessel constricts, and it is now much smaller than its original size. You still have the same amount of blood that needs to get through that blood vessel. So what happens is that blood puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the walls of that blood vessel, and that pressure can create both high blood pressure and headaches. Conversely, if the blood vessels dilate and get bigger, they increase the vascular volume in your head. This will put pressure on your brain inside your skull and create inflammation. Inflammation, as we know, often leads to pain.

You can sometimes wake up with a tension headache, but more often than not, this isn't the case. They are more likely to appear mid-morning or around midday. One of the most common locations to have a tension headache is in your temples and above your eyes. They can also begin at the base of your skull and come up and around to the front of your forehead. The common medical treatment for headaches is pain medication like anti-inflammatories, or vasodilators, which increase the size of the blood vessels, or vasoconstrictors, which has the opposite effect. These medications do work, but they're not a permanent fix. They don't get at the cause of the problem. They also have side effects, just like all medications.

Let's talk about what can generally cause a blood vessel to change its size. You'll remember that we have a network of nerves that come out of the spine. Those nerves individually control various locations of your body. The nerves in your neck innervate blood vessels in your head. So, in the chiropractic world, if your vertebrae are lined up and the foramen where the nerves exit are open and there is no nerve interference, then the brain will send the correct messages through the nerves, the nerves are sending proper messages to the blood vessels, and the size of the blood vessels is maintained at the perfect diameter. Therefore, if this is the case, you won't get those tension headaches.

But, what happens if you've gotten into a car accident or had a fall, bend over a computer all day, or pick up something incorrectly? These things will affect the alignment of the vertebrae in your neck. This will put pressure on these precious nerves that control the diameter of the blood vessels. When those nerves are pinched, blood vessels will be impacted.  So, irritated nerves can constrict those blood vessels or dilate them. Remember, nerve responsibility here is to maintain the integrity of the blood vessels.  The role of the chiropractor is to treat the cause of your headaches, which are the misaligned vertebrae or subluxations. We are not treating the symptoms (the headaches) rather we are treating the cause (the subluxation). Removing the cause will help the symptoms go away and will help them stay away! Medication merely just treats the symptoms and not the cause. Medications are a temporary fix or a bandaid.

That's how chiropractic care can provide incredible relief for headaches. If you're suffering from headaches, please give us a call and look us up. We'll set up an appointment and do a detailed exam including x-rays to determine whether or not your headaches are being caused by a subluxation. If they are,  you are a candidate for chiropractic care, and we will get to work adjusting your spine and correcting the subluxations. I hope this information is helpful to you, and we will do our best to help you in every way we can. I'm Dr. Bob, and I have your back covered!

The Causes Behind Your Acid Reflux

The pain and the hassle of acid reflux can interrupt your daily life and comfort. Here are some of the causes of acid reflux and things you can do to manage and reverse this terrible condition.

Hey everybody! It's Dr. Bob Salamon here with Lowcountry Chiropractic. I hope you all are staying healthy and safe out there. In this blog, we are going to be talking about a condition called acid reflux. It is also called GERD, which stands for Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease. Most people just refer to it as acid reflux. What is acid reflux? What are some of its symptoms? Most of the time acid reflux causes burning into your esophagus and throat. Acid lives in your stomach to digest and break down food. When you have acid reflux, the acid moves up into your esophagus and burns its walls. This is not a good thing. It is very painful, and it can cause problems for you if it happens at night. You can breathe that junk into your lungs which is really bad. Long term damage to the lining for the esophagus can create a syndrome known as Barret's Esophagus, which can turn into cancer of the esophagus. It is very serious, and you will want to deal with it right away.

Let's talk about the mechanics and the physiology of it all.  When you chew your food and swallow it, it goes into your esophagus. Your esophagus is connected to your stomach. There is a muscular valve that opens and closes in between the two that allows the food into your stomach. This valve should close perfectly and tightly so that the acid in your stomach can start breaking down the food. What's interesting is that the walls of the stomach are very strong and can withstand the acid. The walls of your esophagus are not and they cannot handle acid. In a perfect world, that muscular valve would close after you swallow, the acid would do its thing, and then the digested food would move into your intestines. With acid reflux, however, the muscular valve doesn't close all the way so there is an opening between your esophagus and your stomach. When that acid is produced it is then regurgitated (or refluxed) back up into the esophagus because that valve isn't closing all the way. That is when that burning sensation happens and problems begin to arise if left untreated.

What controls this muscular valve between your stomach and your esophagus? Why in some cases does it not do what it's supposed to do? It all goes back to your spine. There is a nerve that comes out of the middle of your back and it controls this particular muscle. Remember, all of the 62 nerves that come out of your spine control something. They control a muscle, an organ, a gland, a blood vessel and so on. In this case, this middle back nerve happens to control this particular muscular valve. In the case of acid reflux, that nerve is not sending the right information to that valve. This is causing it to not close completely or not close at all. So, to correct this condition, you need to fix the subluxation or misaligned vertebra in the middle of your back. The subluxation is not allowing the proper message from the brain to be delivered to the muscular valve to work properly.  Chiropractic is a wonderful solution to this problem. The adjustment realigns that spinal bone and takes the pressure off that nerve. This allows the brain to communicate with the muscular valve, causing it to close properly and preventing acid from refluxing.  If there is a hiatal hernia present, which can put pressure on the stomach and force that muscular valve to open up, that is a more tricky situation when it comes to fixing acid reflux. Chiropractic isn't necessarily as effective in those situations. Thankfully, hernias are the less common cause of acid reflux.

The medical treatment is Prilosec, Nexium and other medications that limit the production of acid in your stomach. Therefore, theoretically, these meds reduce the acid that is in your esophagus. That's not really fixing the problem. Your stomach needs to create a certain amount of acid to digest your food. So, if this medication is lowering that amount of acid, two things could happen. One, the stomach is just going to produce more acid. This will put you in the situation that you have already been in. Or two, the lack of acid in your stomach is going to affect how well your food is digested. It will also affect how well the nutrients are being taken from this food and put into your body. Either way, it's not a good situation. We recommend that you try to get help naturally, via chiropractic care, rather than going the medication route. Also, if you're eating a lot of spicy foods later in the evening, that could be a leading cause of your acid reflux. You need to look at what you're eating, and that maybe what is causing your acid reflux naturally. It is a common condition, and not really a disease. It's more of a malfunction of your body in most cases.

If you are suffering from acid reflux and you want to get rid of it or get it checked out, come see us. We would be happy to examine you and take some X-rays to see if a subluxation is causing your acid reflux.  If it is your problem, we will certainly be able to help you out! Stay well and take care!

How Chiropractic Care Can Help Arthritis

Picture
One of the most common forms of pain, arthritis, haunts millions of Americans every year. Could chiropractic care be one of the best routes to avoid this pain and help alleviate the pain for those already suffering?
Hey everybody! Dr. Bob Salamon here at Lowcountry Chiropractic. For this blog, we are going to be discussing arthritis. Arthritis affects about 54 million Americans every year. We are going to be focusing on osteoarthritis, which is the most common type.  There are many other types of arthritis like rheumatoid, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic, and infectious arthritis, but not as many people suffer from these types of arthritis compared to the number of people who suffer from osteoarthritis.
Another common term for osteoarthritis is ‘degenerative joint disease’. This condition will get worse if you don't take care of it. It will slowly break down your joints. Which joints does this exactly affect? Almost any of them. It can affect your spinal bones, your knees, your ankles, your wrists, and your shoulder joints. Any of your body's articulation points can suffer from arthritis.
What is arthritis?  Medical experts don't have a cause for it, but we will get to that shortly.  At its base, arthritis is an inflammatory condition of the joints that can cause swelling, lack of range of motion, pain, and discomfort.   Medications are one way to treat arthritis, but anti-inflammatory drugs just cover up the pain you're experiencing. Medications aren't addressing the issue or cause of your pain. Therefore you might not feel the pain as much when you use anti-inflammatories, but they can make the problem worse.
There are three steps you can take that can naturally help you treat and deal with the pain of arthritis without medications. They are simple, and ones that are worth taking the time to do. Let's talk about each of them.
  • Your Diet
    • Nutrition impacts arthritis in a big way. You need to be eating foods with little or no refined sugars. We discussed this in our last blog when I mentioned "going green" and "refining your life". Sugars are inflammatory agents. They cause inflammation in your body. If you can eliminate processed foods like desserts, pasta, bread, and other foods that have refined sugars in them, you're going to start feeling so much better.
    • You need to consider consuming less saturated fats, fried foods, and anything that has hydrogenated oils in them. These foods will affect arthritic conditions too. They are also inflammatory agents.
    • Eating better means adding more fruits, vegetables, and nuts to your diet.
    • You need to be drinking plenty of water. Water will help flush out some of the inflammation found in your joints.
  • Staying Active
    • The next step in helping your arthritis is to exercise. Your joints need to be moving. If you have a doctor that tells you "Oh, your back is bothering you, go lay in bed for a week", that's NOT the answer. That is going to make things worse. Your body and the receptors in your body need movement. They need to stay moving to remain healthy.
  • Chiropractic Care
    • The third step is to get chiropractic care. Why is chiropractic care helpful for arthritis? I'll give you a little analogy. If you're driving your car and your front end is out of alignment, what's going to happen when you're driving on the highway? If you take your hands off of the wheel, you're going to find that the car is going to pull to either the right or the left. If it pulls to the right, the tires, breaks, and everything on that side are going to wear down a lot more quickly than they are on the left side. The same is true in your body. If your joints are not moving symmetrically, the weak side will wear out more quickly, and your body will lay down extra calcium on the weak side, this creating spurring and inflammation. You need to keep both your car and body in alignment. If you don't, that tire or arthritic spot is going to continue to get worse.
    • The same situation is found in chiropractic.  Maybe you've had a fall, you had some trauma, and something got out of alignment. Your body will be fighting to restore homeostasis and symmetry, but it won't be able to. What it does then is put down that extra calcium to protect that weak area, thus causing more problems.
    • What I do as a chiropractor is determine what areas of your body are out of alignment. I adjust or correct those areas and get the body working symmetrically again. Effective chiropractic care can stop arthritic degeneration. In some cases, it can even reverse it. It depends on the severity and age of the arthritic condition.
So, that's how nutrition, exercise, and chiropractic can help with arthritis. It is very important to do all of these steps. I tell all of my patients that you have to keep your spine aligned and keep your body symmetrical to keep that arthritis out of your body. If any of you are suffering from arthritis or think you might have it, it's not a death sentence. It can be managed and helped. You can see results with less pain and inflammation. Please, if you're suffering, contact us. We would love to have you come in and do a thorough exam and x-rays. Having an x-ray taken is the most cost effective way to know if you have any arthritis. If you have arthritic conditions, we will be able to help you!
That's it for today. I look forward to seeing you soon!

The Pain of Headaches

Headaches and migraines plague 4 million people every day. But could there be something more effective than just popping ibuprofen after ibuprofen that could help reduce and even eliminate this daily pain? Chiropractic care just might be the best step for you!

Hello everyone! Dr. Bob here from Lowcountry Chiropractic! I hope you are all doing well. Through this week's blog, we are going to be talking about headaches. Headaches plague the majority of us in the US. I don't know many people who have never had a headache before or who don't have them on a somewhat regular basis. We are going to talk about headaches and how to manage them or eliminate them if possible. Now, there are two basic types of headaches. There are migraine headaches and tension headaches. There are others too, like cluster headaches, etc. But for all intents and purposes of this blog, we are going to be focusing on the tension headache because they are the most common. Migraine headaches tend to be a little more difficult to manage because a lot of the time they are hormonal or chemical in nature.

Let's talk about tension headaches. Those are the headaches where usually you wake up fine in the morning, but as the day goes on you start feeling pain in your temples or the front or back of your head. Sometimes they go away on their own, and sometimes you take ibuprofen and they go away. These headaches are very common and most people suffer from them. What causes a tension headache? They are usually caused by a vascular problem, meaning the blood vessels. These blood vessels are found in your head and brain. If the blood vessels in your brain are dilated, they will take up more space in your brain and put more pressure on your head. That can cause headache pain. If the blood vessels are too constricted, the blood flowing through the walls of those blood vessels puts a lot of pressure on them and can cause headache pain as well.

How do you manage a tension headache? We in chiropractic believe that chiropractic care is one of the best natural ways to control tension headaches. Why is that? Well, if you remember, the nerves that come out of your spine, and there are many of them - 62 to be exact - those nerves control and regulate your body.  These nerves come off the spinal cord and run through the openings between the spinal vertebra called foramen. If one vertebra is a little out of place (called a subluxation, as we've discussed in previous blogs) it can pinch or irritate a nerve and affect the transmission of the messages from your brain to the rest of the body. In the case of tension headaches, we are talking about message interference with blood vessels. If you have subluxation, it could constrict blood vessels or dilate these vessels, resulting in headaches.  So subluxations are a very common cause of headaches. If you have a subluxation in your neck, these muscles will get tense and tight and start pulling on the back of your head, and that can create a lot of tension and headache pain as well.

A chiropractor is trained to realign (or adjust) these spinal bones, get pressure off the nerves and allow the body to function as it should. In this case, blood vessels go back to their normal size and the headaches go away. We've had tremendous success in this office helping people with headaches.  We've had people come in who have had headaches their whole lives and after they get adjusted several times, their headaches disappear. It's pretty cool!

The medical model for treating headaches is to prescribe medication that can reduce headaches, but it doesn't correct the cause of those headaches. You will continue to get headaches and continue to take medications to minimize those headaches and that is just a vicious circle. Chiropractic care gets at the cause of the problem. In this case, the cause of the problem is the subluxation or that irritated nerve. So when you adjust the bone and get the pressure off the nerve, good things begin to happen.

I hope that this helps you. If any of you are suffering from headaches and you want to get rid of them naturally without taking medications, just call us!  We will do a very in-depth examination and if I feel that I can help you, we will get started right away and get those headaches gone. I hope the rest of your day is good, and we will see you for our next blog!

Carpal Tunnel and Chiropractic Care

More than 8 million people are affected by carpal tunnel syndrome every year, and it can slam the breaks on your life. But with the steady hands of a chiropractor, the pain and suffering this syndrome can cause might be eased away under their skilled hands.

Hello everyone, Dr. Bob here! Today we are going to be discussing something that many of you have suffered from or might suffer from in the future. That is carpal tunnel. Let me start by asking you a question. How many of you suffer from pain, numbness, or tingling in your hands or fingers? Surprisingly, a lot of people fall into this category. If you have these symptoms, you might have carpal tunnel syndrome. We are going to talk about carpal tunnel syndrome, what it is, how to diagnose it, and how to treat it. Hopefully, the option is to treat it without surgery, but sometimes surgery is required.

The carpal tunnel is located in your wrist. The carpal or wrist bones form a tunnel through which the median nerve runs and supplies the thumb, index, and middle finger. If you have pain, numbness, or tingling in those three fingers or in that particular part of your wrist where the median nerve goes through that tunnel, you might have carpal tunnel syndrome. If you have pain throughout your hand or in your other fingers then you probably don't have it. But there are likely other issues involved. What happens in carpal tunnel syndrome, due to repetitive movement of the hands, the bones tend to drop and shift so that the tunnel of the carpal bones gets smaller. When that tunnel gets smaller, it can start putting pressure on that median nerve. This pressure can cause numbness, tingling, pain, etc in those three main fingers.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is diagnosed usually with a nerve conduction study. They hook you up to electrodes and run current through the nerves that run down your arms. It's not a pleasant experience;  it can be a little painful. The nerve conduction studies have gotten a lot better over the years, so they can exactly identify where a nerve is being pinched or blocked, and diagnose how to fix it properly. If it turns out that it is true carpal tunnel, it will then be graded in terms of mild, moderate, or severe. Usually, in severe or moderate cases, they will opt to do surgery. The surgery helps release tendons in that area of the carpal tunnel and will help expand the tunnel and take away the pain. In my personal experience, over the last twenty years as a chiropractor, it seems to me that the technology for these kinds of surgeries has gotten better and the treatment has gotten better, so the surgery is often very effective. There are several different kinds of surgeries depending on how severe a particular case might be. Some are more invasive than others;  those being more invasive will take longer to heal and might keep you out of work a little longer than expected.

However, if you don't have true carpal tunnel syndrome but you have pain in similar areas, or even if you have mild or moderate Carpal Tunnel pain, in some cases chiropractic care will help. How does this work? Well, as you know, chiropractors adjust the spinal bones. But we also adjust any joints and bones in the body, and there happen to be many joints and bones in your hands. Sometimes, the median nerve is being irritated just because one of the carpal bones is out of alignment. So, a chiropractor can go in, realign and adjust those carpal bones, and thus open up the tunnel and help with those symptoms.

If you've had your nerve conduction study and the pain, pinching, or blocking isn't coming from true carpal tunnel, then it is usually coming from the elbow, lower neck, or upper back. It is more commonly coming from the upper back because the branches of the nerves found there go down your arm and into your hand and branch off to feed the median nerve. So, you always want to check before you have surgery whether or not the blockage is actually in your neck or the carpal tunnel. If it turns out the blockage is in your neck and you have carpal tunnel surgery, it's not going to be successful. Chiropractic care can help a lot with adjusting the upper back and lower neck with any kind of pain, numbness or tingling in your upper arm, forearm, and fingers. We have seen a lot of this kind of pain recently, and patients are responding very well to chiropractic care in these cases.

So, that is the real summary of carpal tunnel syndrome. You always want to try and look at the least invasive way of getting it taken care of. Chiropractic care does fit the bill in many cases of carpal tunnel syndrome. I hope that helps! Till next time, take care!
